Traffic models to support mobility analysis for Grugliasco Traffic Plan

Traffic models to support mobility analysis and the Grugliasco General Urban Traffic Plan

Zona Ovest di Torino, a company whose objective is the social and economic development of the western area of Turin, was commissioned by the Municipality of Grugliasco to prepare the General Urban Traffic Plan (PGTU) of Grugliasco. TRT was selected to develop the traffic model supporting the PGTU, aimed at assessing the transformations envisaged in the planning scenarios.

TRT developed two models for Grugliasco. The first, implemented in the VISUM environment, supported the evaluation of the new university campus currently under construction (a project managed by West Zone of Turin with TRT’s support). The second was developed using SUMO, an open-source dynamic traffic simulation software. This approach made it possible to assess traffic flows at a global level using VISUM, while understanding more localized dynamics through the SUMO model, leveraging its flexibility and extensive computational capacity over large areas such as the municipal network of Grugliasco and neighboring municipalities.

This approach is innovative both in terms of the software used and the scale of the model, which features microscopic characteristics typically applied to smaller territorial contexts.

The configured model was then used to evaluate the planning scenarios envisaged by the PGTU, enabling comparison and a comprehensive assessment of the impact of the simulated measures.
